Swirl flaps are small butterfly valves fitted to the intake manifold just before the cylinder head intake ports of most modern diesel engines.

These are usually replaced when there is an oil leak and they are attached to the engine manifold. There are either 22mm or 33mm ones. There can also be either 4 or 6, depending on how many cylinders the car has. Swirl flaps are designed to create swirl or tumble of air to aid better combustion under light load where soot levels tend to be dominant, because of lack of air. They are also to help with driveability in low load conditions.

The dealers will replace the whole manifold which is over £1000 and the same problem could happen again in the future.
